The Society was founded in 1974 and was registered as a charity by the Charity Commission on 29 April 1976.
The charitable objects of the Sussex Opera and Ballet Society are to educate the public in the arts and sciences, and in particular the arts and sciences of music, by the presentation of opera and ballet by providing courses and other desirable activities.

The Society helps to provide bursaries to promising young students studying ballet and opera, normally on the recommendation of the trustees of the institutes concerned.

The Charity is administered by a Management Committee who are Trustees of the Charity comprising:

The Officers and Committee members are elected by the members of the Society at the Annual General Meeting and hold office for one year but may be eligible for re-election thereafter.
